Double cleansing is the single most impactful change you can make to your skincare routine. One cleanser isn’t enough. Here’s why and how.
Why One Cleanser Fails
Oil-based impurities (makeup, SPF, sebum) don’t dissolve in water. Water-based cleansers miss them. That’s why your skin still feels grimy after washing. Double cleansing uses oil to dissolve oil, then water to clean the rest.
Step 1: Oil Cleanser
Apply to DRY skin. Massage 60 seconds in circular motions. This dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. Add water to emulsify—it turns milky. Rinse.
Best picks: Banila Co Clean It Zero (balm), DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, Kose Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil (budget).
Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser
Apply to WET skin. Gentle foam or gel. Low pH (5.5) to protect your acid mantle. 30–60 seconds, rinse with lukewarm water.
Best picks: COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel, Hada Labo Foaming Cleanser, CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser.
When to Double Cleanse
Every evening if you wore makeup or SPF. Morning: Single water-based cleanser or just water is fine—your skin didn’t accumulate oil-based impurities overnight.
Results
Within 1–2 weeks: fewer breakouts, brighter complexion, better serum absorption. Your other products will work harder because they’re actually reaching clean skin.
