Tea tree oil is one of the most popular natural remedies for skin tags. But does the science support the hype? Here’s what we know.

The Evidence

Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) has well-documented antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. For skin tags specifically, the evidence is mostly anecdotal—no large clinical trials exist. However, its drying and astringent properties may help shrink small skin tags over time by dehydrating the tissue.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Skin Tags

Step 1: Clean the area with mild soap and water. Pat dry completely.

Step 2: ALWAYS dilute. Mix 2–3 drops tea tree oil with 1 tablespoon carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, or sweet almond). Never apply undiluted—it can burn skin.

Step 3: Apply with a cotton swab directly to the skin tag. Cover with a small bandage.

Step 4: Repeat 2–3 times daily for 3–6 weeks.

Step 5: The tag may darken, dry out, and eventually fall off. If no change after 6 weeks, switch methods.

Best Tea Tree Oils

Handcraft Blends 100% Pure Tea Tree Oil — Steam-distilled, therapeutic grade. Affordable. Amazon bestseller.

Plant Therapy Tea Tree Oil — Third-party tested. Kid-safe dilution ratios on label.

NOW Essential Oils Tea Tree — Budget option. Pure and effective for skin applications.

Realistic Expectations

Tea tree oil works best on very small tags (under 3mm). Larger tags rarely respond to topical treatment alone. Success rate is roughly 30–40% based on user reports—lower than freezing or ligation. Consider it a gentle first attempt, not a guaranteed solution.

If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test on your inner arm 24 hours before applying to a skin tag.
